After the first use, I found I really needed to use softener because the clothes came out rough. I tried to wash a towel, it came out a little hard even with softener. If items are too heavy, the machine may stop. Take out the heavy items and wait a while, the machine will start again. Duungarees should be washed a pair at a time. I think the machine is great and does what it claims to do. By the way the clothespins are flimsy and fall apart. I expected it to do a bit more than it actually does. It only washes the clothes by agitating every 7-12 minutes on a standard or gentle cycle. The base is a little unsteady while spinning, so I have to keep an eye on each load to make sure it doesn't tip over. The top bucket, which includes the water and clothing, merely sits upon the agitator, which makes it very unsteady while washing. Once the cycle is complete, the clothes are still within dirty, soapy water. You then have to drain the (heavy) bucket and either rinse each item of clothing yourself, or add new water to the bucket and keep running the 'washer' until the soap has been removed from the clothes. At any rate, once the soap has been rinsed from the clothes, the clothes are still completely drenched, and will need to be dried (hand-wrung, line dry, etc).
